Yes, definitely get either the MRA Vario, or a shorty, or both. They're both a huge improvement on the stock one.

For riders that are fairly new, I would just say:

Super easy bike to ride. But a loaded gun of you're not confident in your ability to exercise self restraint.

I believe you still get the "mode" changes, with the Standard non-s, bikes, the modes just don't adjust the suspension.

I also believe Pro Italia was offering a deal where if you purchased a Standard with ABS, you get free panniers.

Agreed: There is no comparison between the power of the 1100 and the 1200! The 1200 takes your breath away when you first ride it! BIG wow factor!

IMHO, however, the older MTS "feels" nimbler and is more comfortable. Others may disagree...

Most OEM accessories that are specific to the original MTS's are no longer available. That being said, there are plenty of aftermarket ones that are in many cases much better anyway.

If you're going to be riding two up, you likely won't even want to start with a 250, etc... I think your thinking along the lines of the VSTROM is an excellent choice for a starter bike. At the end of the day, when you "outgrow" it, your wife will end up with a very well regarded, popular, and ...
