Wanna buy » Interested in buying but wondering about how it rides

If you're interested in buying a Multistrada, this is the place to post questions about the bike.

I've been riding for about 8 years now. Owned various bikes, ducati 750ss, suzuki bandit 600, triumph tt600, honda varadero 1000 and recently an aprilia tuono 1000.

I'm interested in finding a touring type machine. Doesn't have to be something like BMW tourer but after my first bike was a ducati I've always wanted one again.

Now after riding for 8 years I really only do 1000 cc motorbikes and above. I understand the multistrada is a V-Twin so top end isn't probably that good. However, please can tell me how the machine rides. Is it a buzz to ride. Do you get the adrenaline rush.

Any responses most welcome.

Thanks

I am not going to write much about this one, besides, literally volumes had been written about how well this bike rides and performs.

One this i am going to say. This bike GROWS on you!

Some people maybe a bit put off by its front fascia styling, but after owning one for a little over 5 months i can say that this is the best looking and easiest riding motorcycle I've ever ridden.

I have been riding for about 20 years, and over the years I've ridden and owned three different Ducatis, a Kawasaki 750RR, a Ural, Dnepr, a Jawa 350 and 350 Sport, a Speedway 50 and 125cc two strokes, etc...

One more thing, previously i owned two different 1000ds equipped bikes and in my opinion Multi 1000DS is probably the best performing 1000DS bike too. This is probably due to a better stock air filter and 50mm exhaust link pipes pipes as opposed to much smaller ones on monsters and sport classics. One thing for sure it is going to have the same amount top end power as Tuono but this motor loves to be at 5000-6000 rpm. You can do a few things to make it more top-endy (racing cams, etc) but why?

Wait... Are you asking about Multistrada 1000, 620, or 1200?

Firstly thanks for replying.

I'm talking about the 1000 or 1100, not the little 620 :)

I understand the DS stands for dual spark. I have no idea what this means. Would it be possible to explain what this means and if it's worth getting a newer one with the DS?

Yes the DS stands for Dual Spark, and Dual spark means the motor uses two spark plugs per cylinder on each side of the combustion chamber, literally. So there are four spark plugs used by this twin motor.

All 1000 models are 992 CC and are Dual Spark air / oil cooled motors. 1100 is 1078cc i think. The 1100 and 1000 motors are not all that different Actually they are virtually the same except for displacement. Also it is kind of hard to tell if 1100 has more power.

Both motors are almost indistinguishable when it comes to power delivery and basically the amount of it in the top end, though 1100 has a bit more torque, which in my opinion is also very difficult to feel on the "seat-of-your-pants" dyno. So the two bikes are really only different on the paper.

No matter whether you decide to go with the 1000 or 1100 model, I would definitely suggest getting the "S" model such as 1000s DS or 1100s DS, simply because they come with Ohlins suspension, which gives you at least 3000-4000 bucks worth of suspension upgrades...

Cheers!

Ok thanks really appreciate the replies.

To answer your previous point, I'm not totally into the face of the bike. As a read in a different article, it reminds me of a wet cat's face :))

Does the dual spark provide any difference in performance? According to other articles I've read, it's only there for EU emission standards.

Also, I really like a high seat height. How high is the bike's seat height? Also, do you know how much weight I can carry on the back, possibly in some hard luggage.

Thanks

Don't know. But if you unplug one spark plug per cylinder it will run like sh*t...

850mm/33.5in

Depends on the luggage, average is 10 kilos i think..

Also the specs are pretty detailed here: http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2 ... 000SDS.htm

Having covered about 50,000 miles in 2 years I am still having fun every day to and from work, then out to play ...with the old 2003 1000DS.

They do have faults like any bike, all well documented in the forum....loads of torque ...engine braking which catches out the jap rider following you (no brake light to warn him).

Great view of the traffic allowing daring overtakes, cause you can read so far ahead.

Probably doesn't need a steering damper  eh Schtirlitz
cause it goes round corners like its on rails

Twin spark to give clean burn, Alpha Romeo did it too
You can't buy happiness but you can buy a bike and that's pretty close.

... and

You won't be sucking anyone else's exhaust pipe. The 1000DS will keep up, or more likely lead any group ... ZX14 and FJR's aside, which you will keep up with and probably pass on the twisties!
