Hello - I've been reading this and other forums for several weeks, learning about the Multistrada.

I have found a private owner with a red 06 1000S which has less than 400 miles on it. (Apparently he had a car accident right after he bought the bike, and its been in his basement ever since.) The bike is all stock and perfect, but the factory warranty is almost up and the engine number is one that may have bad valve guides.

I called the local Ducati dealer and they said not all engines listed in the bad valve guide service bulletin go bad, and since it is not a recall they can only repair the engines that develop actual problems. So it seems if I develop the valve problem out of warranty I may need to pay for the repair myself.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated - should I pass on this one, or is the valve guide problem not that common? Thank you for any advice.

Where are you located? Who is your local dealer? I just had my guides changed in my 2005 S with 2,700 miles. I was outside the warrantee period, however, my dealer still covered the repairs. Some poeple here are reporting thier local dealers are not willing to goodwill the guides.

My valve guides were replaced by Ducati, even though the bike was out of warranty and I was the second owner. I'd ask the dealer what their policy is, and if they'll try to get DNA to aprove it regardless of warranty.

Worst case, it seems people end up paying labor with Ducati providing all the parts.

recheck the engine number with someone else, the first shop that looked at my 06 said yes and the second shop said no. Turns out that by mid 2005 the problem had been handled.....or so I'm told. Get your engine number and check for the thread on this site.....good luck

I'm fortunate in having a great dealer, and a good relationship with them.

Mine was found to be one that may have valve guide problems, so they replaced them while it was still under warranty. I didn't have any symptoms.

Where are you located?

Of course, things do change with the regional reps...

Thanks - I am located in Maryland and there are two dealers, one in Elkridge and one in Rockville. Neither volunteered to replace the guides - in fact both suggested it was a rare situation and would only be needed if the bike was losing power. Neither said that Ducati would pay out of warranty.

I can get this nearly new 1000s at what I think is a great price ($8800). But I don't want $1500 in valve guide repairs or its not much of a deal.
