Wonder if I can get some advise from the group.
I'm selling my 1998 Ducati 600 SS and looking at the MTS 620. How would these engines compare?I would suspect the gearing to be a little different, but the engine close to the same for maintenance and horsepower. What rpm is the MTS reving at when cruising at 120kmph / 75mph?
I'm selling the 600 because I want to start touring and my KLR650 just revs to high on the highway. It will also be a commuter bike during the summer. Should I be looking at the MTS1000? NOT that my 600 isn't fast enough, just thought for lower rpm on highway, and...well...more HP isn't a bad thing....

Thanks for your help.

The 620 doesn't rev very high at all when cruising on the highway. In fact, many owners drop a tooth on the front sprocket to increase the revs a bit.

I haven't ridden a 600 but when i bought my 620 new the guy in the dealers workshop who did the 10km test run said it was the first 620 he had ridden and he felt was a noticeable improvement over the 600.
Of course he was praising what they were selling me - but could have said nothing if he didn't like it.

At 80mph I'm just under 6000 rpm - 5,700 I think. I keep that in my head in order to be sure to get into 6th on the highway because its awfully smooth in 5th too.
The main problem I have at these speeds is realizing the bike is actually AT these speeds despite feeling alot slower.
Ohhhh, I'm a happy camper..

I failed to mentioned that the 620's speedometer is off 5mph according to my gps... so in reality in 6th gear @ 5000rpms your speed is actually 66mph.

My speedometer must be a little more accurate. I show 70 at 5050 :P
Seriously, though, according to gearing commander, a stock 620 in top gear will be traveling 67mph (108kph) at 5000rpm and 80 (129) at 6000.
As for rpm at 120kph, you could just about get there in 2nd (119kph at the 10k rpm redline), you'd be running at 8050 if in third, 6850 in 4th, 6050 in 5th and 5555 in 6th. In other words, there's plenty to work with.

Keebler, you are on the right track. The KLR is deficient in the cylinder department, to the tune of one. So cruising on the KLR will never be as good as on the Multi. I contemplated the same 620vs 1000 question, and went for the 1000DS.

If I want to go slower, I just give it less throttle. If you want more form the 620, you are sort of stuck. One valid point could be fuel consumption, my 1000DS is not exactly the most fuel efficient bike I have seen, it may be related to that throttle I mentioned, not sure.

I expect the 620 to use less fuel, but how much less? probably not that much.

The 1000DS is great, and used ones sell for almost the same as 620. The single swingarm also looks much better.
