Thinking of buying but not sure a bit worried about reliability as I'm not to good with a spanner and worried that I might end up spending a small fortune at the local dealer for repairs. Any advice

Buy one is right, The only things you should learn is chain adjustment and checking fluid levels, most of that is in the owners book or here on the site. The rule for wrenching is Don't take anything apart you can't put back together. You will love an MTS. kw

Just do it and don't look back. I would recommend LT Syder's book on desmodue engines. Lots of good info there and it takes a lot of the fear out of doing your own valve adjustments and maintenance.

Just curious: Why an 1000? Do you have a particular one in mind? Have you investigated the differences between the DS1000 and the 1100? The maintenance intervals are 1,500 miles longer and the valve guide issues on a handful of 1000's have been resolved, just a few of the things improved starting in 2007. If you're in an area where gasohol is sold the tank expansion issue is one to consider, as well. These bikes are a blast to ride and pretty bulletproof if you do your due diligence beforehand. :)

I have owned one since 2006. I have had some problems, but after much work, Ducati paid for much of it, and now, it works well.

I've a black 2006 1000S. My first bike. I looked at all kinds and this one just fit me. I've had headlight gremlins that my shop has taken care of and no other issues at all. It's an absolute joy to ride.

Just make sure the bike you are getting was well maintained with all services fully done and on time. Good condition Multis are reliable, it's the neglected ones you want to stay away from. If you can, buy 2006 and newer (1100 would be the ideal choice)
