I need some help. I am getting ready to purchase my first Multistrada and am interested in your views on year and model.
I found a 2004 with 4K on in for 5500. Is the bike worth the price or should I get a later model such as the 1100? I have been riding for 30+ years and have a BMW. I want something that is more everyday friendly & fun. BMW is a great distance bike but a PIA for fun riding. This will be my first Ducati.

Make sure it has the '05 sidestand, should have been put on under warranty. Depending on the owner, it might also have the '05 mirrors instead of the shorter '03-'04 mirrors on it.
Problem with a low mileage '04 is that it is out of warranty, but still likely to have valve guide problems in the future. It will cost you $1k or so to get the 4 valve guides redone, depending on how much of it you do yourself (remove/reinstall the heads, for example).
The 1100 is hardly more powerful than the 1000 IMHO. S model suspension is better bang for your buck than the engine, if you can find an S.
Lastly, the gas tank will have problems with ethanol; it will swell until it leaks or doesn't fit in the frame. Most multis should have had a new tank by now, check with the owner, if not he or she can still get one before August. It looks like California Cycleworks is making an aftermarket replacement that will work on all 1000/1100, though, retail will be about 1/2 of an OEM tank.
The one on this site for sale at $8,900 is an incredible price. It is an '07 1100s with 1,900 miles. If you can afford it, that should be your bike. Fly to IL and ride it home. I have done that now with 3 bikes I have bought over the past 4 years. I love my '08 1100s.

I have said this is the best bike I have seen listed in three years! Jump on it today or you will miss out and kick yourself when it is sold.
Call him and agree on a price pending a clean bill of health from the Ducati dealer. Then pay for a full check up and ride it home!

I have got 48000km on my 2004 and I have put 23k of them on myself. I have no idea if the valve guides have been done but it does not use oil ,does not blow smoke and it goes like a scalded cat.
Who's to say that the guides haven't been changed on this one anyway

Well in a word no.....but there is no guarentee that the 1100 will not need the same eventually, there are plenty of examples of tank and guide issues with the 1100 aswell , its a crap shoot..luck of the draw so to speak...
at the milage of the 04 and the price , i think its a wash..both bikes are virtually the same ...only the investment of $5500 for the 04 is $3000 less.....so why not ....especially for someone new to Ducati ...
BTW Guide issues for two valve Ducatis have been common off and on since the early Pantahs , the best fix is after market from the git go..(its a Ducati thing)
